Operationalizing Excellence: Leveraging SRC Accreditation for Superior Patient Outcomes at the Brain Institute

Share on Social:

In today’s competitive global healthcare landscape, hospital leaders must balance efficient resource utilization with exceptional patient outcomes. For Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), excellence isn’t a one-time achievement—it’s an ongoing commitment.

This approach is exemplified by the Brain Institute at MONZA Hospital in Bucharest, Romania. As an SRC multi-accredited Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Robotic Spine Surgery, the institute reflects strong alignment with global best practices and multidisciplinary care—validating its dedication to high-quality patient outcomes.

Leadership Perspectives on Strategic Accreditation

Accreditation as an SRC Center of Excellence requires significant institutional buy-in and an investment in both clinical program development and surgical technology. Adrian Demușca, CEO of MONZA Hospital, views this accreditation as a testament to the hospital’s collaborative model.

“We believe that the best outcomes are achieved through teamwork,” says Demușca. “That is why, at MONZA Hospital, we have invested in strategic partnerships between highly experienced specialists and advanced medical technology, supporting the Centers of Excellence developed within BRAIN Institute. This accreditation reflects our partner’s commitment to international standards and to delivering the best possible results for patients.”

Multidisciplinary Expertise: The Master Surgeons at the Brain Institute

The strength of an accredited facility is fundamentally tied to the caliber of its medical staff. At the Brain Institute, five surgeons have achieved SRC’s prestigious Master Surgeon accreditation—an achievement that reflects a high standard of surgical volume, clinical rigor, and dedication to the highest standards for patient safety.

Dr. Sergiu Stoica – Master Surgeon in Neurosurgery

A specialist in vascular and deep-seated brain pathology, Dr. Stoica brings more than two decades of clinical experience to the neurosurgical department. His practice is defined by the integration of intraoperative neuronavigation to ensure millimetric accuracy in complex tumor resections. Dr. Stoica’s surgical practice is grounded in a deep understanding of cerebral anatomy and pathology, combined with a methodical and patient-centered approach.

“SRC accreditation is not just a certification, but above all a confirmation of our medical culture—one grounded in rigor, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the responsible use of advanced technologies for the benefit of our patients. It is a responsibility that our team embraces every day.”Dr. Sergiu Stoica

Dr. Mihai Adrian Cristescu – Master Surgeon in Robotic Spine Surgery

As Co-Director of the Center of Excellence in Neurosurgery, Dr. Cristescu has been a driving force in establishing the first SRC-accredited Center of Excellence in Robotic Spine Surgery program in Romania. Holding the European Diploma in Spine Surgery, his work focuses on complex spinal pathologies using the Mazor X™ Stealth Edition and O-arm™ imaging. His leadership ensures that the facility’s robotic interventions are backed by precise intraoperative planning, significantly reducing surgical trauma and optimizing recovery timelines.

Dr. Alexandru Thiery – Master Surgeon in Robotic Spine Surgery

Dr. Thiery, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, co-leads the Robotic Spine Surgery team, focusing on high-complexity cases including severe scoliosis and spinal tumors. As a certified trainer for the Mazor X™ system, he manages a high volume of complex procedures, including robotic interventions on patients as young as 20 months old. His expertise in pediatric spinal deformity highlights the Brain Institute’s ability to apply advanced technology to the most sensitive patient populations.

Dr. Bogdan Smeu – Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

With a career spanning 25 years, Dr. Smeu utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including the Da Vinci Xi robotic system, enhancing precision, control, and visualization in complex bariatric and abdominal surgery. He performs a broad spectrum of bariatric and metabolic procedures, tailored to each patient’s clinical profile, within a multidisciplinary framework focused on long-term outcomes and metabolic improvement.

Dr. Bogdan Mocanu – Master Surgeon in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery

Dr. Mocanu holds the distinction of being the first ENT specialist in Europe to receive SRC Master Surgeon accreditation. With over 15,000 procedures performed, including 1,300 complex skull base surgeries, his work is a testament to the power of sub-specialization.

Dr. Mocanu notes: “Receiving the Master Surgeon recognition from SRC is not only a personal honor, but also a validation of our entire team’s commitment to innovation, precision, and above all, patient trust.”

Institutional Value: Standardization as a Competitive Advantage

For the Brain Institute, the value of SRC accreditation extends beyond the operating room. It provides a structured framework for quality outcomes, clinical benchmarking, and market differentiation. By aligning with SRC’s global standards, hospitals ensure that procedures are performed within a system designed for transparency and continuous improvement.

In a globalized healthcare market, accreditation as a Center of Excellence and Master Surgeon provides patients and referring physicians with the confidence that the institution’s clinical results are verified by a rigorous, independent process.
