Professional Liability Groups Reference ASMBS BSCOE Listings The ongoing rise in the incidence of obesity continues to increase the need and demand for bariatric surgery. As the number of programs grows, so does the need to manage risk. Fortunately, bariatric surgery is more widely accepted within the underwriting community. The key to reducing bariatric surgery risk is the development of a comprehensive bariatric surgery program and use of dedicated and well-qualified physicians and staff. Programs that adhere to the standards required by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence (BSCOE) program help to establish best practices for patient care. Professional liability groups across the country reference the ASMBS BSCOE designation listings when evaluating insurance rates. For instance, before insuring a surgeon, Novus, a Risk Retention Group and a SRC Strategic Alliance Group member, wants to know whether the surgeon has the ASMBS BSCOE designation or has applied for it. “The ASMBS BSCOE designation is an important measure in evaluating professional liability risk,” says Cindy Del Priore, Account Executive. Other companies, like Catlin Group Limited, allow a greater amount of credit to surgeons that have ASMBS BSCOE designation because it is an indicator of better risk. The effect is a lowering of the premium for BSCOE designated risks with a credit range between 5 and 10 percent. ProAssurance is another company that considers ASMBS BSCOE designation when selecting surgeons to insure. Support from professional liability groups demonstrates the leadership role the ASMBS has taken, in conjunction with SRC, in creating a gold standard for bariatric surgery.
