SRC Meets with CMS and AHRQ

Members of SRC’s leadership traveled recently to DHHS to meet with leadership of two key governmental agencies. Walter J. Pories, M.D., Board Chairman; Gary M. Pratt, CEO; Gail Hughes, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., Vice President, Research; and Jackie Lueck Sneve, M.P.A. Vice President, Strategic Alliances met with leaders from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The purpose of the trip was to discuss SRC’s future goals and plans for BOLD™.

At CMS, the discussion centered on SRC’s movement toward research. The group discussed how BOLD would be used to establish risk stratification standards and eventually, conducting clinical trials using the BSCOE hospitals and surgeons that form SRC’s Research Consortium. Time was also spent on recent developments that are occurring with Medicare intermediaries and how their deviations from the NCD are affecting coverage and reimbursement.

The meeting with Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., Director of AHRQ, focused on SRC’s mission, SRC research endeavors and grant funding opportunities for SRC and its BSCOE centers. Most of the meeting was devoted to BOLD, which was well received by a very complimentary Dr. Clancy.

“It’s important that SRC continues to build and maintain close relationships with CMS and AHRQ” said Hughes. “BOLD is a revolutionary clinical data reporting tool. It is evidence-based medicine in practice — not concept. SRC will be able to translate research findings from the data and performance measures into better patient care. The information will help policymakers and other health care leaders make critical health care decisions to improve health outcomes and health disparities,” explained Hughes.
