Mexican College for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Launches Center of Excellence Program

Designees Earn Dual Designation with SRC’s IFSO-endorsed International Program

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, and RALEIGH, NC (May 10, 2011) – The Mexican College for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (CMCOEM), the country’s professional society for the bariatric and metabolic surgical specialty, today announced the launch of a center of excellence program for bariatric surgery providers in Mexico. The program, which will be administered by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), is designed specifically for Mexican surgeons who are members in good standing with the society and hospitals that provide bariatric care on an inpatient basis.

“The creation of our very own center of excellence program confirms our commitment to excellence in bariatric surgery and exemplifies our willingness to be evaluated against the most rigorous standards,” said Dr. José Alberto Aceves Díaz, President of CMCOEM. “Earning CMCOEM designation enables bariatric patients in Mexico and beyond to identify our members who have met the requirements for delivering high-quality care.”

With more than 100 members, CMCOEM is the third-largest national society dedicated to the bariatric surgery specialty in Latin America. Its members have trained a large number of bariatric surgeons across Central and South America and played a leading role in organizing the first Latin American Symposium for the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). The CMCOEM center of excellence program is an extension of the college’s commitment to the study, promotion and advancement of the surgical treatment of obesity and related disorders.

“The CMCOEM center of excellence program will provide tangible benefits for participants, their patients and their community,” said Dr. Neil Hutcher, Chief Medical Officer of SRC and bariatric surgeon. “Designees will join a network of more than 1,100 surgeons and 600 facilities worldwide that are advancing bariatric care by participating in one of the programs we administer. We are proud to partner with the society to implement this important center of excellence program.”

The 10 requirements for CMCOEM designation were developed in conjunction with the Mexico’s leading bariatric surgeons. A commitment to long-term patient care and success necessitated that the requirements be comprehensive, research-based and verified through a rigorous site inspection. The official designation bestowed on approved participants is “Centro de Excelencia en Cirugía Bariátrica por el Colegio Mexicano de la Cirugía de Obesidad y Enfermedades Metabólicas.”

Each CMCOEM designee also earns an automatic dual designation with SRC’s International Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery (ICE) program. This is possible due to the way the requirements and processes between the two programs align. IFSO, which represents 40 national associations of bariatric surgeons, endorses SRC’s ICE program.

Surgeons and hospitals performing bariatric surgery in Mexico can initiate their involvement with the CMCOEM program by registering on the SRC website.

About the Mexican College for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases

The Mexican Society of Obesity Surgery was established in 1995. At the request of the Secretary of Health, the society developed the paper that formed the basis of the Mexican federal government’s official guidelines for the comprehensive treatment of overweight and obese patients (NOM-174-SSA1-1998). Members of the society have trained a large number of their colleagues in Latin America and established strong relationships with other bariatric societies worldwide. In 2006, the name of the society was changed to the Mexican College for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases to better reflect the needs associated with training bariatric specialists in the country.
