Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Launches
Center of Excellence Program
Designees earn dual designation with SRC’s IFSO-endorsed international program
SÃO PAULO, Brazil, and RALEIGH, NC (September 3, 2010) – The Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM), the world’s second-largest bariatric surgery society, today announced the launch of a center of excellence program for bariatric surgery providers in Brazil. The program, which will be administered by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), is designed specifically for Brazilian surgeons and their associated hospitals that are full titular members in good standing with the society.
“The Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery is very proud of this joint venture with SRC. It is very important for the future of bariatric and metabolic surgery in our country to work under the ‘center of excellence’ philosophy. We will improve our results, decrease our complication rates and even make it easier to discuss reimbursement with the insurance companies. Our work is just beginning, and I am sure it will develop and grow in the following years,” said Dr. Thomas Szego, President of SBCBM.
With more than 900 members, SBCBM is the second-largest national society dedicated to the bariatric surgery specialty in the world. Brazil is home to many of the world’s finest bariatric surgery programs, and its foremost bariatric surgeons are leaders on the global stage and play a significant role in outcomes research. The SBCBM center of excellence program reflects the leadership position of both its members and the society as a whole.
“By partnering with the specialty’s leading societies to administer center of excellence programs, we help ensure that safe, high-quality bariatric care is delivered regardless of where a patient lives or chooses to have surgery,” said Gary Pratt, Chief Executive Officer of SRC. “The SBCBM program enables Brazilian providers to be further recognized for their achievements in bariatric and metabolic surgery. Designees will join their colleagues across the globe to create a network of excellence where care improvements, patient referrals, and collaborative clinical studies on obesity and metabolic diseases can proliferate.”
Designation requirements echo those of the other center of excellence programs SRC administers and are verified through a site inspection. The 10 core requirements, which were developed in conjunction with leading bariatric surgeons, hospital administrators, health plans, researchers and patient advocates, have been recognized for their universal relevance. SBCBM and SRC will continue to work together to appropriately tailor the program to Brazilian healthcare providers and ensure compliance with government regulations.
The official designation bestowed on approved participants is “Centro de Excelência em Cirurgia Bariátrica da Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Bariátrica e Metabólica.” Each designee also earns an automatic dual designation with SRC’s International Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery (ICE) program. This is possible due to the alignment of requirements and processes between the two programs. The International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), which represents 40 national associations of bariatric surgeons, endorses SRC’s ICE program.
Surgeons, hospitals and freestanding outpatient facilities performing bariatric surgery in Brazil can initiate their involvement with the SBCBM program by registering on the SRC website.
