Established in 2003, Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) is an independent, nonprofit organization governed by industry stakeholders and dedicated to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgical care worldwide.
To achieve our aims, we have developed two distinct but integrally linked initiatives:
SRC developed and administers best-in-class bariatric surgery center of excellence programs to ensure
that the safest, highest quality care is delivered to bariatric surgery patients across the globe. SRC
manages the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® (BSCOE) designation on behalf of
the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
(ASMBS) in the US and Canada, and the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM) center of excellence program in Brazil. For surgeons and facilities located outside of these countries, SRC created the International Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery (ICE) program.
SRC's programs provide a single definition of excellence versus a tiered approach, and designation is awarded
to both the surgeon and the facility at which the surgery is performed. A commitment to long-term patient
care and success by the surgeon and affiliated facility as well as a multidisciplinary team focus necessitates
that the qualifications for SRC’s designations be extensive, research-based and verified through a rigorous
site inspection.
More than 650 surgeons and nearly 400 hospitals and freestanding outpatient facilities around the world have been designated through SRC. As SRC’s center of excellence programs grow, the global network of excellence they create will spur improvements in overall patient care, patient referrals, data exchange, and collaborative clinical research for obesity and metabolic diseases.
Excellence also requires that meaningful data is appropriately shared with all stakeholders so that the highest quality care becomes a universally recognized standard. SRC created the Bariatric Outcomes Longitudinal Database℠ (BOLD℠) to provide a mechanism for ongoing data capture and support best practices development for the treatment of morbid obesity and its associated conditions. Established in 2007, BOLD is already the world’s largest repository of clinical bariatric surgery patient information, with data from more than 100,000 patients logged annually. Each participant in SRC’s center of excellence programs is required to submit detailed information on every patient that has bariatric surgery.
BOLD provides participating surgeons with unparalleled, real-time access to individual patient information that supports clinical decisions. Aggregate reports also enable providers to compare their practice’s performance against benchmark data.
SRC utilizes BOLD data to measure program compliance and drive in-depth analysis across a wide variety of obesity-related parameters. Researchers from around the world can leverage BOLD data to provide reference standards and inform clinical study design. BOLD, together with SRC’s network of designated COE surgeons, also offers an unmatched infrastructure for clinical trial management.
