RALEIGH, NC (May 6, 2010) - Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an internationally recognized leader in healthcare quality committed to advancing bariatric and metabolic surgery excellence worldwide, today announced that the number of patients in its Bariatric Outcomes Longitudinal DatabaseSM (BOLDSM) now exceeds 250,000. With an average accrual rate of nearly 12,000 patients per month, BOLD has emerged as the world's largest dedicated repository of clinical information for the bariatric and metabolic surgical specialty. BOLD adds dimension to its size by capturing comprehensive, long-term patient data from diverse provider settings.
BOLD is used to ensure ongoing compliance with SRC's center of excellence programs and support quality improvement for bariatric and metabolic surgery. More than 900 surgeons participating in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®
(BSCOE) program enter their patients' data in BOLD. This network of participants, coupled with BOLD's substantial patient population, provides a resource for clinical studies related to the surgical treatment of obesity and its associated conditions, including type 2 diabetes.
"Bariatric surgeons participating in the ASMBS BSCOE program demonstrate an unprecedented commitment to quality, and they're willing to put their results on the line," said Dr. Neil Hutcher, Chairman of SRC's Board of Directors and a bariatric surgeon at Commonwealth Surgeons in Richmond, Virginia. "By entering information on every patient who undergoes bariatric surgery, this distinguished group has created a valuable registry of clinical data that can be utilized to prove the safety and long-term efficacy of the procedure."
BOLD's size enables investigators to exponentially increase the statistical power that can be applied
to data analyses of high- and low-frequency occurrences. Longitudinal data collection also sets BOLD
apart from other bariatric databases that are inpatient-oriented or only capture 30-day outcomes.
Participants in the ASMBS BSCOE program and outside investigators can request BOLD data for a number
of purposes, including internal quality assurance, payor relations and research, by contacting
research@surgicalreview.org. SRC's Data Access
Committee reviews these requests and decides whether the proposed use warrants acceptance based on
SRC's Data Dissemination Policies and Procedures.
"Baseline data from American Society for
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery-designated Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence using the Bariatric Outcomes
Longitudinal Database," an article detailing the results of the first analysis of BOLD data, has been
accepted for publication in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.
